About Children singing

As the role of music has diminished in course syllabuses and teaching, children are losing access to their voices. We are concerned about this and as a response, The Royal Swedish Academy of Music launched Children singing to collect national comprehensive work to expose the importance of an education that includes singing. As an academy, we are taking responsibility to make sure that all children will grow up with singing and vocals as an obvious part of their education and upbringing. These are important resources for children to build, and benefits can include gains in confidence, improvements in mental health and social inclusion.

Our purpose

Children singing’s purpose is to reinforce the cooperation between music, school and life on a national, local and eventually international basis. We aim to create opportunities and to share your initiatives, to expose the reasons to why children need to have access to their voices.

Our goal

Our goal is to develop a program so that every child, from pre-school and upwards, can access their voice, so that the voice can become a powerful instrument. We want to reduce exclusion and introduce inclusion - music has to become a tool for education.

Our target

We target children in school of varied ages and we are aiming to reach out to anyone working with children’s vocals, whether it is within their profession or as a volunteer. Children with special needs, who are excluded or vulnerable are especially made visible, as are children who carry an illness and are cared for at a special home or hospital.

The Project exposes different aspects of children’s voices:

  • Singing together in pre-school, school and choir (including singing as a form of communication for collective development of language and knowledge)

  • Digital learning and pedagogical tools used for singing.

  • Local cooperation models to increase possibilities for children’s singing.

  • The importance of singing to improve health and equality.

  • Music as a school subject.

How are practical and more comprehensive efforts made?

  • By interdisciplinary studies with a general research question: How does singing affect children and young people? By working close to the practical world, we can impact children’s musical environment and context.

  • With proven research and real life experience, we can influence the course syllabus and reinforce choir- and teacher training.

  • By exposing the importance of our voices. A trained voice does not only come handy while singing, it can help children speak up in groups and debates and thus, develop a sense of identity.

  • By exchanging international knowledge and sharing our experiences and methods about children’s voices beyond borders. We will share the Swedish methods, during as well as after the project.
